Chiefs Fire Todd Haley

Chiefs Fire Todd Haley

After months of speculation over his job security, Chiefs general manager Scott Pioli and owner Clark Hunt released a statement Monday morning announcing the release of head coach Todd Haley.

Although this may come as a bit of a surprise to some, the writing has been on the wall for some time. There have been rumblings since training camp 2010 that the grapes between Pioli and Haley had been growing steadily sour. But it was Haley's inconsistency that sealed his fate in Kansas City.

"Todd helped this team in many valuable ways over the past three seasons, and I am thankful for his contributions," said Pioli in a statement released by "Unfortunately, we have not been able to establish the kind of consistency we need to continue to build a strong foundation for the future and we believe a change is important at this time."

Chief's owner Clark Hunt echoed Pioli's sentiments.

"This was a difficult decision but one that we feel is best for the future of the Chiefs," he said. "Although there have been bright spots at different points this season, we have not made meaningful progress and we felt that it was necessary to make a change. We appreciate Todd's contributions during his time with the club, and we wish him well in the future."

The Chiefs fell 37-10 to the New York Jets in embarrassing fashion Sunday and that appears to have been the final straw. But you can't say the Chiefs executives were not patient with Haley. Sunday marked the fifth time this season that the Chiefs have been outscored by more than 27 points and officially ended any chance at a winning season.

Haley didn't get off to a good start following a shortened offseason after the NFL lockout was lifted. In true Haley fashion, he went against the grain with a lightened approach to the preseason.

Haley finishes his career in Kansas City with a 19-26 record as Chiefs head coach.
