Orton or Cassel in 2012?

If there was one thing that we learned from Romeo Crennel's first press conference as head coach of the Chiefs, its that he has a preference as to which quarterback he'd like to see under center in 2012. So who is it?

When the Kansas City Chiefs removed the interim tag next to Romeo Crennel on Monday, everyone wanted to know just three things. Who would be the offensive coordinator, defensive coordinator and which quarterback, Matt Cassel or Kyle Orton would start in 2012.

After the press conference on Monday, it became clear that Romeo has a preference as to which man he'd like to build an offense around.

Crennel went out of his way to thank Orton for his time in Kansas City. In fact, had the Chiefs not had Orton, it's unlikely that Crennel would have been promoted to head coach.

"I'm probably not sitting here if Kyle hadn't done the job that he did and I'm very appreciative of that," Crennel said of Orton.

Reading the tea leaves as we often have to do with the Chiefs, it would appear those comments told most of the team that Crennel wants General Manager Scott Pioli to sign the unrestricted free agent quarterback.

That would mean the incumbent starter last season, Matt Cassel, could be the odd man out. If that's the case, the Chiefs might want to start shopping his services around. That is of course, assuming Pioli can retain Orton to a long term contract.

Warpaint Illustrated.com has learned that the Chiefs have approached the agent of Kyle Orton about such a deal. However, before Orton signs in Kansas City, his entourage has to make sure to see if there are any better options for their client in the NFL.

Granted free agency doesn't begin until the first weekend of March but that doesn't mean agents can't chat with general managers about ‘what if' scenarios for their clients.

Should the Chiefs sign Orton, then we've already heard rumblings that the Seattle Seahawks might have an interest in acquiring Matt Cassel.

That would mean Cassel would be reunited with his former USC coach, Pete Carroll. The NFC West team would be wise to consider adding Cassel. in fact, it would be a move that could elevate a young team from mediocre to respectability in a division that's not very strong outside of the San Francisco 49ers.

So which direction will Crennel ask his general manager to go? From all accounts it would appear that the Chiefs new head coach has made up his mind about who he'd like to start for his football team come opening day this September.

Now it's up to Pioli to make that happen. ?
