Chiefs Sign RB Peyton Hillis

After failing to sign a single player in the opening day of free agency, the Kansas City Chiefs finally rewarded the patience of their fans with the addition of their first signing in 2012, Running Back Peyton Hillis.
Although many around Chiefs Nation started to question if the Chiefs would ever make a splash when free agency started on Tuesday afternoon, Chiefs General Manager Scott Pioli filled a big need in adding 4th year running back
Peyton Hillis
to the roster.
Hillis entered the NFL as a seventh round draft pick of the
Denver Broncos
. But after a promising sophomore season, then Broncos head coach Josh McDaniels, surprisingly traded Hillis to the Cleveland for Browns for quarterback
Brady Quinn
.
With Cleveland, Hillis had a break out year amassing over 1600 total yards, 13 touchdown in route to becoming one of the most talented young running backs in the NFL. However, that success was short lived. In 2011, Hillis never got his feet under him after fighting injuries. In fact at one point, Hillis questioned if he even wanted to play football again.
But when Hillis was released on Tuesday Chiefs General Scott Pioli made Hillis a top priority and promptly invited him for a visit to Kansas City.
With the addition of Hillis, the Chiefs now have a scary one-two punch in the bruising Hillis and a presumably healthy
Jamaal Charles
. This move also confirms what many already assumed to be fact that running back
Thomas Jones
will not be returning to the Chiefs in 2012.
Hillis is the type guy who could very quickly become a cult icon with the Chiefs fan base. His lunch-pail approach and fierce bruising style, should bring some solid appreciation from the Arrowhead faithful.
Although this move is not likely to cure the growing sentiment that the Chiefs are not willing to spend on the open market, it will ease some tensions with a frustrated fan base - at least for now.
