KC Chiefs Mock Draft Round 3: A.J. Jenkins WR

With the 11th pick of round three (74th overall), the Kansas City Chiefs select Illinois Wide Receiver A.J. Jenkins.
Though wide receiver would not appear to be a position of need for Kansas City after selecting
Jon Baldwin
with their #1 pick in 2011, speedy wide receiver
A.J. Jenkins
brings more to the Chiefs than just another set of hands.
With his 6’2” frame, he posted a 4.38 40-time at the NFL Combine. Add that with some his ability to get off the line of scrimmage using his speed, Jenkins is a versatile receiver that can line up on the outside, in the slot, or let his presence be felt as a tenacious blocker.
Though Jenkins would be a steal in round three, I believe he could be there when the Chiefs select based of his weight alone.
Thats’ because at 190-pounds, Jenkins is just not heavy enough to risk a higher pick in for the Chiefs. Furthermore, short of putting on some more weight before the start of the 2012 season, he cannot withstand the consistent pounding his position will require in a 16+ games season.
The Chiefs have already met with Jenkins and it has been reported that the Chiefs were showing significant interest in Jenkins at the Combine and Senior Bowl as well.
Though I don’t believe the Chiefs should invest more than a 3rd round pick in Jenkins, his contributions to the offense would be instant. Jenkins would give the Chiefs a fast down-the-field threat that they currently don’t possess in any of their current receivers.
Kansas City Chiefs
Quarterback,
Matt Cassel
, will be walking a fine line in 2012 after having a forgettable 2011 season. Though you can make many excuses for why Cassel has not developed into the player many expected him to be at this point, with the addition of Jenkins, there will be no more excuses.
With wide receiver
Dwayne Bowe
yet to sign his franchise contract, the Chiefs would be wise to bring another offensive weapon on board. But Jenkins has some value on special teams as well.
Jenkins has significant experience in the return game and has enough speed to make a difference in the NFL despite the new kick-off rules.
The Chiefs have had a lot of success in round three over the past two years. Jon Asomoah and
Tony Moeaki
in 2010, with
Justin Houston
and
Allen Bailey
in 2011 were all selected in the 3rd. When you add in
Dustin Colquitt
(2005) and
Jamaal Charles
(2008) - this 3rd round pick could turn out to be very import for not only the future but in 2012 as well.
Jenkins could be that type of player if used in the right role. With Kansas City’s multiple running threats in Charles and the recently signed,
Peyton Hillis
, an explosive down the field threat is just what this offense has been missing.
Round 5: DT
Vontaze Burfict
Round 5: DT
Nicolas Jean-Baptiste
Round 6: QB
B.J. Coleman
Round 7: C
Garth Gerhart
