Chiefs Mock Draft Round 1: Michael Brockers
Warpaint Illustrated Beat Writer
Posted Apr 25, 2012
With the eleventh overall pick of the 2012 NFL Draft the Kansas City Chiefs select LSU Defensive Tackle Michael Brockers.
I can hear the Warpiaint Illustrated message boards already erupting into a tizzy over what I believe to be the most practical pick for the Kansas City Chiefs in round one.
In making this selection, I accept the animosity towards the pick is almost a rite of passage for any lifelong Chiefs fan. Yes, this spiked fruit has popped the blood vessels of Chiefs Nation all too many times. The sexy defensive lineman that is supposed to fulfill the roll of a dominant defensive presence yet meets the fate of the many others that had tried, and failed, to rewrite history before them.
Names like Junior Siavi and Ryan Sims are familiar but names such as
too are sure to insight fierce argument in any Chiefs friendly tailgate circle.
So why would the Chiefs continue to flirt with failed decisions of the past destined to repeat themselves?
The short answer is that the Chiefs have a need at the position. With
continually looking like he will not return to Kansas City in 2012, the Chiefs now have a shortage in pass rushing defensive ends.
Furthermore, the Chiefs two starting DE’s Glenn Dorsey and Tyson Jackson, though grading well against the run, are a near liability in pass rush situations.
Kansas City Chiefs head coach
was able to use his defensive savvy to mask the problem in 2011 with exotic coverage’s but to run the defense the Chiefs new skipper has used in the past his front 3 have to step up production.
The Chiefs made a very moderate tweak to Jackson’s contract this past week which essentially allows the Chiefs to cut bait with Jackson after 2012. Though it is possible that this sets up for Jackson to be resigned in 2013, much of that will be decided on the field in the upcoming season.
Glenn Dorsey will also be due a new contract after 2012 and the Chiefs are not likely to resign both Either way the Chiefs are almost assuredly going to continue slicing a big piece of their fiscal pie off for the big boys in the trenches but if they are going to be fitting the bill, it might as well be for the right player.
That player may just be Michael Brockers.
Brocker was one of the most productive defensive linemen in college football in 2011 compiling 47 total tackles, 10.5 tackles for loss, 2 sacks, and 5 QB hurries. Although he struggled at the combine, Brockers significantly improved his numbers at his
Pro Day and looks to be climbing back up Mock Draft boards across the country---most just do not have him landing in KC.
He’s exceptional against the run but unlike the Chiefs current D-ends he can shred pass blockers and be a disruption in the passing game.
Chiefs General Manager
has a history with LSU defensive lineman (i.e. Dorsey and Jackson) and has no problem taking the player he feels is a combination of safe, needed, and the right fit at the right time.
The Chiefs are in a position to take whatever player they perceive to be the best available after filling multiple needs in free agency and you can put defensive line right near the top of the list of positions Pioli is eyeing.
If Pioli continues with the draft philosophy he has already demonstrated in the past, the selection of Brockers should not be a surprising one.
