With the three B’s (Bowe, Breaston and Baldwin) firmly planted in the Chiefs offense in 2012, Kansas City added Fresno State slot receiver, Devon Wylie, with their fourth round pick on Saturday.

There was never a doubt the Chiefs needed to add another receiver in this draft. With All Pro Receiver, Dwayne Bowe, still squabbling over a long-term contract with the organization, the Chiefs found a player that could expand the production of their receiving core and give their quarterback a mid field flyer.

Devon Wylie is one of the fastest players in this draft. He comes into the NFL with his 4.3 speed - after playing in a wide open offense. He wasn’t a touchdown machine in college (only one in his career), but he caught 56 passes for over 700 yards as a third or fourth option in the Boise State offense.

He’s also a standout special teams player returning punts and he can contribute in coverage as well. But it’s his blazing speed that should have Chiefs excited about this selection.

Sure he’s small in stature and the 50/50 balls in the NFL versus college will be harder to secure. But with his speed, his ability to play in the slot, the Chiefs hope Wylie turns into their version of the Patriots, Wes Welker.

He’s more polished a receiver coming out of college than Dexter McCluster was two years ago. Each is similar in size and speed but the Chiefs likely will keep McCluster at running back in 2012. But what Wylie has that McCluster doesn’t is a motor that never stops even on the sidelines.

With Wylie on the roster, the Chiefs add some much needed speed at the receiver position. And that’s going to help Quarterback, Matt Cassel. Wylie is a blur off the line of scrimmage and his vertical jump is 39” makes him a receiver that could add another cog to an already impressive group of offensive players in Kansas City.

Barring a trade up next for the Chiefs is pick #11 in the fifth round.
