For some NFL players, especially those that had hoped to make the final roster in Kansas City, Friday had to be grueling. But late in the evening, the team made its roster cuts and trimmed their roster to the league limit.
With so many injuries to deal with plus a player suspension for game one against the Atlanta Falcons on September 9th, it’s likely the Chiefs coaches and personnel people had a few heated debates about the final 53-man roster. Though most of the cuts were predictable, it’s clear the Chiefs are going to be very heavy at running back, tight end and in the secondary.
The Chiefs waived 17 players including former draft picks, Safety Donald Washington, Linebacker Gabe Miller, Wide Receiver Junior Hemingway and Defensive End Jerome Long.
Kansas City also ended the season of two of their players, Cornerback De’Quan Menzie and Quarterback Alex Tanney. Both were placed on injured reserve thus meaning they can’t be active at any point this season.
The team also cut a pair of veterans, Defensive Tackle Amon Gordon and Linebacker Leon Williams.
With the cuts done for the moment, provided the Chiefs don’t make any veteran additions to their roster, Kansas City will be able to put together their eight-man practice squad beginning at 11:00 am Saturday morning.
Though no roster is set Friday’s Chiefs roster had some oddities to it. The team isn’t carrying any fullbacks instead chose to carry five running backs, Jamaal Charles, Peyton Hillis, Cyrus Gray, Shaun Draughn and cult hero Nate Echus.
Kansas City also kept four tight ends, Tony Moeaki, Kevin Boss, Jake O’Connell and converted offensive lineman, Steve Maneri.
On the defensive side of the ball, the Chiefs are carrying a combination of ten safeties and cornerbacks. The biggest surprise on the list is former Kansas State Safety, Tysyn Hartman. But with injuries to cornerback Brandon Flowers and Safety, Kendrick Lewis, his chances of making the team were significantly enhanced.
However for the final three or four players that made the final roster they probably aren’t going to feel all that comfortable. It’s quite likely the Chiefs put in a few roster claims so it’s possible that the euphoric moments of Friday might yield turned in playbooks over the weekend.
