What Went Right?

In the aftermath of their second consecutive double-digit loss, the Kansas City Chiefs did have some positives that came out of Sunday’s loss.

1. QB Matt Cassel - Sure he had a costly fumble and an interception but much like he did in his first year in a Chiefs uniform, he took an absolute beating but never quit.

On the afternoon, he was 23 of 42 for 301 yards and a pair of touchdowns to Dwayne Bowe. And despite being sacked five times on Sunday, that should give him some confidence heading into the Saints game next weekend in New Orleans.

But there are still some fundamental issues with his game at the moment that he has to overcome. But honestly, I’m not going to do that until I’m convinced he can’t get the job done.

2. WR Dwayne Bowe - He’s beginning to prove that he can become an elite receiver. His fourth quarter touchdowns were impressive considering the Bills knew that he’d likely be the primary target on every snap.

But what was impressive about his performance against the Bills, was the fact he was on his game in route running and made all the catches that were within his reach.

And after his game against the Falcons, I had some doubts that he’d get there in week two. Still Bowe and running back Jamaal Charles are the biggest cogs to the Chiefs offensive fortunes in 2012.

So if Bowe can keep delivering the goods and if Charles finds his footing, then it should not matter how woeful KC’s defense plays.

3. P Dustin Colquitt - I could give the Chiefs punter some grief for failing to run down Bills return man, Leodis McKelvin in route to his 88-yard return, but I won’t do that. That’s not his job.

Then again I could give my former radio partner some grief for not kicking the ball closer to the sidelines. But that aside, Colquitt punted seven times at nearly a 45 yard average and that’s a good day.

But as I strive to find the positives in this loss, that means if I’m praising the efforts of Colquitt, it wasn’t a good afternoon for the rest of his teammates.
