Three Things: Chiefs vs. Saints
Warpaint Illustrated Columnist
Posted Sep 23, 2012
All good things came in three's today so why stop the flow now. It was whacky improbable and hard fought. But the Chiefs prevailed over the Saints thanks to six field goals by kicker Ryan Succop.
So what should Chiefs fans take away from Sunday’s 27-24 overtime victory over the
New Orleans Saints
? There were numerous items in this game to be thrilled about if you bleed red. But sticking with the theme of the day - here are three.
1. Defense Answers the Bell -
It was a total team effort on Sunday. The defense slowing down the potent Saints offense and I do mean a team effort on that side of the ball. In the first half, the Chiefs best defensive stops came in the form of the red flag in the back pocket of Head Coach,
's back pocket. He was money on two of the challenges that reversed a couple of plays that could have put this game out of reach in the first half.
At times though, Kansas City struggled to get a pass rush and the secondary looked and acted disorganized. However, in the second half, the Chiefs defense held Saints quarterback,
, 56-yards passing and overall New Orleans managed just 70-yards in the second half.
2. Succop was Mr. Relevant -
The last pick of the 2009 NFL Draft out of South Carolina connected on six field goals and an extra point accounting for 19 of the Chiefs 27 points. On the afternoon he connected on field goals of 25, 45, 34, 38, 43 and the overtime winner from 31-yards. After his big miss in week one against the
, Succop has been all nails. And the Chiefs needed the hammer of his right foot to seal the deal in New Orleans.
3. Season Changing Win? - There was much to gripe about in Kansas City after being squashed in weeks one and two. The defense was porous and the offense was inconsistent. And add those items with the fact that Crennel looked like he was in Cleveland again. Worse yet, the players were passing on their accountability after those wipeout losses.
But wins in the NFL can cure a lot of ills. So it’s safe to say, the Chiefs road to recovery began Sunday with a must win at one of the most difficult places to play in the league.
Yet before we have the Chiefs going 14-2, there are still some critical fixes that need to be made to this football team in the coming weeks. Today along with six field goals from Succop, a franchise setting touchdown romp by
and a clutch safety by the defense made the differences in losing and winning.
In the following weeks though, 3’s instead of 7’s could be troubling news for the Chiefs football team.
