On Sunday with the game on the line, Kansas City Chiefs kicker, Ryan Succop, managed to come through for his teammates in a big way.
Not that at any time during the course of the game was I worried (ha), even when the score was 24-6, those pesky thoughts in the back of my head that the Chiefs would blow another one never really entered into my head. Of course, those thoughts generally rattle around in my cranium especially when I’m home alone and the TV is broken.
But on a more positive note, when the Saints came out loaded for bear and took the game straight to us, I, like probably many others in the KC viewing area were about ready to flip the channels to see if the horses had drowned during the local water polo matches. But, true to my viewership, I persevered and managed for the moment not to sling my chips and salsa at the TV, or at least to the part of the screen where I could still see it.
And much to my surprise, the Chiefs managed to come roaring back from a nearly impossible deficit mostly on the remarkable performance of
Jamaal Charles
who ripped off a franchise record run of 91 yards, and ended the day with 233 yards down scamperville and practically single handedly buried the Saints right to the heart of the Superdome.
In terms of fantasy football, Charles led the day with somewhere in the neighborhood of 35 points (I have no idea what that means) but evidently it means a lot to anyone who invests sacred time and effort into predicting who the fantasy football players are going to be. That is kind of like saying if I choose the right fantasy players throughout the entire year and get to the point where I am good enough to select the best fantasy players, then I might end up winning a new 19” color TV so I can watch the other teams in the Super Bowl.
Since I’ve got that off my chest, I do have to hand it to the boys in red for they came out fired up against a Saints team that hasn’t started 0-3 since 2007 but for many years before that they were lucky and were really doing well if they DID come out 0-3. I mean, for the Saints of old, it wasn’t uncommon for the majority of the fans to come out with paper bags on their heads just so the TV viewing audience couldn’t identify their faces.
No doubt that the Chiefs were in a must win situation and by God, they had the tenacity to get themselves together and they never let the fact that they were down by 18 points put them in the outhouse. That must have been one hell of a speech that Romeo wherefore art though Romeo gave to the crew at halftime. It probably was something along the lines of, “Ok boys, we’re down to beat the band and if you guys don’t do something to come back and beat this team, then the band is going to come back and beat us. Don’t quote me on that.
Well, next week we play the Chargers and they got walloped by the Falcons so I think that they are going to be ripe for the picking and if there is anything that is a given in this crazy game of pro football, it’s that nothing is given. Even though a field of dreams is mostly associated with baseball, I believe that with the field of goals, the Chiefs are on their way back up the ladder and ready to Succop the next foe!
