Will 21 Be Lucky for new Browns QB?
Browns QB Jason Campbell

With all the flack surrounding Browns quarterback, Brandon Weeden, the last two weeks, the Browns announced on Wednesday morning, he would be benched in favor of former Raiders Quarterback, Jason Campbell. Will that decision tip the scales for Cleveland to end the Chiefs undefeated season?
Since 1999 the
have started 20 different NFL quarterbacks. On Sunday against the
Kansas City Chiefs
that number will increase to 21. That’s because journeyman quarterback,
, will earn his first start for the visitors from Ohio.
After losing consecutive games with incumbent starter,
, Browns Head Coach Rob Chudzinski, decided the best chance to keep the score close against the Chiefs was to switch quarterbacks.
In thinking about that polarizing decision, the Browns head coach may have a strong argument to switch quarterbacks this week. Campbell did play for the
and he has faced the Chiefs before with success. After all, he was part of the Raiders teams that dominated games at Arrowhead for six consecutive seasons.
Though he doesn’t possess a strong arm he can throw the rock with some efficiency. However, he does tend to stand in the pocket too long and that could be a dangerous endeavor in facing a very athletic Chiefs defense.
Still Campbell is no slouch and quite honestly, had it not been for an injury in Oakland and woeful head coaching, he might not be a back-up in this league. Sure the proof is in the pudding and he has squandered many NFL opportunities. But I give him props for hanging around long enough and wading through the back-up waters to get another chance to guide an NFL offense.
It’s a big game for Campbell and teammate Wide Receiver,
. The standout receiver has been subject to multiple trade rumors before next Tuesday’s NFL trade deadline.
That combination could prove complex for a Chiefs secondary that had some issues stopping
. Eventually they exposed his flaws. But most of those flaws can be directly attributed to the singular fact, he was making his first NFL start.
This isn’t the first rodeo for Campbell. In fact, I always thought the Chiefs should have taken a flyer on him a couple of years ago when the Raiders unceremoniously let him go.
Still he’s making his first 2013 start at Arrowhead against the undefeated Chiefs. The disadvantage he has this week in facing Kansas City is they won’t overlook him much like they likely did with Case Keenum last Sunday.
There are still enough Chiefs defenders on this year’s roster who understand, if given time in the pocket, Campbell can pick apart their secondary. Again the only reason I’m remotely concerned about this match up is because Campbell used to be a Raider.
He’ll come into Arrowhead with some confidence, familiarity and likely won’t be rattled by the Terror on the field and the one brewing in the stands. In the last two wins at home when the Chiefs defense was on the field, the Sea of Red overwhelmed opposing quarterback. I doubt Campbell will be bothered by that aspect one bit.
That means Campbell might not be so flustered when the Chiefs bring the heat and the noise rises to jet engine decibels. Should that be the case, KC’s defense needs to hit the ground running to make sure the former Raider quarterback plays similar to the quarterback he’s replacing.
