Chiefs Camp Day 3: Charles Extension

Chiefs Camp Day 3: Charles Extension

St. Joseph, MO - The big news of the day was the potential holdout of All World Running Back, Jamaal Charles. But that proved to be a puff of smoke after the Kansas City Chiefs gave him a new contract extension thru the 2017 season.

Did anyone really believe the Kansas City Chiefs would not take care of their best offensive player? Apparently some of you did after word spread on Tuesday that Running Back, Jamaal Charles was going to be a no show when veterans reported to training camp on Wednesday afternoon.

For those that follow Warpaint Illustrated, we tried to warn you that any lengthy absence, which there won’t be now that he’s under a new contract, of Charles was really much ado about nothing.

The two-year extension the Chiefs signed with Charles gave their All Pro running back some immediate cash and job security. The terms of the deal weren’t announced but General Manager, John Dorsey, likely structured a deal that was very cap friendly in 2014 and 2015. That should allow the Chiefs to get Linebacker, Justin Houston, under a new contract in short order.

There is no doubt Charles is the key to KC’s offense. The same can be said for Houston. By getting deals done (granted Houston has not concluded his agreement as of this writing), it’s a good sign that Dorsey values his prime time performers.

Charles will be at Thursday mornings practice and likely will address the media with big smiles. After all, his old contract was generous but his new deal represents his value to the Chiefs franchise.

Let’s hope the team can do the same with Houston.

Chiefs Quotes:

In preparation for Thursday’s first full squad morning workout, the remainder of the roster hopefuls made their grand entrances to their summer dorm rooms on Wednesday afternoon. A few players stopped off to say hello to the media and offered a few thoughts about the upcoming camp.

Tamba Hali - “I’m starting to take pride in what the Chiefs organization has done with drafting guys who can get after the passer. Each year we’re bringing in better guys. To put together a group like what they’re trying to do, coach has all of us trying to get after the passer; it’s going to help our team. We want to enjoy doing it while we’re playing together.”

Junior Hemingway - “I see a lot of talent and you can tell that they are starting to get comfortable with everything. Our mindset as receivers: you go out there and make plays, make plays. Try to win every rep you can and make plays.”

Eric Kush - “We have a ‘fat arm Friday’ so we go in there and just kill the arms and everything. Somehow, someway that thing found its way onto Twitter and Facebook and stuff. I’ve been working. Haven’t put on too much weight, just converting a lot of body fat into muscle and working on that ratio. It’s been a lot of fun working this summer with (Anthony) Sherman, Jeff Allen and everything. Over the off-season it’s been great.”
