Though the negotiations came down to the wire, the Kansas City Chiefs have announced that they have signed safety Jerome Woods to a new contract.

No terms of the deal were announced but according to the Kansas City Star the contract is for six years. Woods was selected to his first career Pro Bowl in 2003 and was one of the few defensive players that made plays all season long.

Woods scored two touchdowns off interceptions in 2003; one against the Pittsburgh Steelers at home and the other against the Packers in Green Bay. The interception in Green Bay kicked started the Chiefs 17-point rally against the Packers and helped secure the Chiefs sixth straight win to open the season.

Woods had 79 tackles in 2003 but under Greg Robinson’s defensive scheme did not record a sack. Under Gunther Cunningham’s scheme, Woods could be used to blitz. He was very effective doing that in the mid to late 90’s when Cunningham was coaching the defense in Kansas City.

Woods was very outspoken about the Chiefs hiring of Cunninghnam and made the trip from his home in Memphis to attend the press conference announcing his hire. Cunningham noticed after watching Chiefs games that Robinson was under-utilizing Woods and often had him lined up in the wrong position.

With Greg Wesley signed, sealed and delivered back in December, Kansas City has one of the best safety tandems in the NFL.

With the March 3rd deadline fast approaching the Chiefs still are in the process of trying to sign defensive end Eric Hicks and back-up tight end Jason Dunn.

Right tackle John Tait has been tagged as the Chiefs transitional player and he can start talking to other teams beginning next Wednesday. If Tait, were to receive an offer sheet, the Chiefs would have seven days to match the offer or lose Tait without compensation.

It’s believed the Chiefs primary motivation for tagging Tait was due to the fact, they needed more time to secure him to a long term deal.
