NFL Experts Analyst Tom Marino and Warpaint Illustrated.com Publisher Nick Athan offer instant analysis on the Chiefs last third-round pick, safety DaJuan Morgan.

Instant Analysis: Tom Marino

I thought he played well this past year. To me he’s an in-the-box kind of guy. I thought he was more of a run defender than a pass defender, but for the most part he’s a good football player and a guy that gives them some value. He was one of the highest-ranked high school kids in the country as a junior, but got in a bad car accident and didn’t play his senior year of high school. But they stayed with him at NC State. He’ll give the Chiefs some help on special teams and probably right now as a backup safety.

Instant Analysis: Nick Athan

With Greg Wesley on the trading block and veteran Jon McGraw in the thirty-something crowd, Kansas City had to find another young safety. This is a solid move for the Chiefs because Morgan could also be insurance in the event Bernard Pollard does not step up this season. Morgan provides some defensive pop in the secondary and can also be a flyer on special teams. He’s steadily improved each season and he’s been on KC’s radar screen since last year when the team was scouting his teammate, Tank Tyler.

Pre-Draft Scouting Report:

Has size and some playing savvy, but wasn't a fast-twitch athlete. Is stiff in his pedal and I would seriously question his ability to match up with a receiver in the slot. Double moves give him some serious problems (FSU). Best areas of his game were his take on, tackling skills in the open field and his willingness to fill the lane. Coverage limitations concern me, but he can improve in this area and develop into a productive special teams player and eventual starter within the league.
