Projecting the 53-Man Roster

Now that preseason is over, the Kansas City Chiefs and 31 other NFL teams must cut their rosters to 53 players. The Chiefs don't really have any roster surprises ahead unless they claim a player released from another team. The final decisions won't be made until Saturday, but here are the players we think will make the final cut.

Offense (25)

QB (3) - Brodie Croyle, Damon Huard, Tyler Thigpen.

RB (4) – Larry Johnson, Kolby Smith, Jamaal Charles, Dantrell Savage.

FB (1) - Mike Cox.

WR (5)Dwayne Bowe, Devard Darling, Will Franklin, Jeff Webb, Bobby Sippio.

TE (3)Tony Gonzalez, Brad Cottam, John Paul Foschi.

OL (9) - Branden Albert, Herb Taylor, Brian Waters, Tre Stallings, Rudy Niswanger, Wade Smith, Adrian Jones, Damion McIntosh, Barry Richardson.

Summary: The only notable cuts here are running back Jackie Battle and tight end Michael Allan. Both are good players, but there are better options for the Chiefs. One offensive lineman who had been impressive early was Edwin Harrison, but the Chiefs are already heavy at offensive line due to Branden Albert's injury. The other player on the outside looking in is wide receiver Maurice Price, who was hit by a late injury. He was steady, but with Franklin out, Sippio gets the nod over Price.

Defense (24)

DL (8) - Turk McBride, Alfonso Boone, Tank Tyler, Ron Edwards, Glenn Dorsey, T.J. Jackson, Tamba Hali, Brian Johnston.

LB (6) – Donnie Edwards, Demorrio Williams, Pat Thomas, Napoleon Harris, Weston Dacus, Derrick Johnson.

CB (6) - Patrick Surtain, Brandon Carr, Tyron Brackenridge, Brandon Flowers, Dimitri Patterson, Maurice Leggett.

S (4) - Bernard Pollard, DaJuan Morgan, Jarrad Page, Jon McGraw.

Summary: There's room to add another linebacker depending on if the Chiefs keep Napoleon Harris. Other than that, there are no surprises in this group. One possible fight for a final roster spot may come down to the age of Jackson over Edwards at defensive tackle. Jackson won't slide to the practice squad, as he's too good a player and prospect.

Special Teams (4)

Punter - Dustin Colquitt
Deep Snapper - Jean-Phillipe Darche
Kicker - Connor Barth
Returner - B.J. Sams.

Summary: Even with the hamstring injury to Sams, the Chiefs may be forced to keep him as insurance in the event Dantrell Savage does not get the job done as the primary return man. Jamaal Charles may be better suited to handle kickoffs, but Sams is the best option at the moment. He was solid Thursday against the Rams, but his injury could keep him out a few weeks.
