Former starting safety Bernard Pollard was the biggest name as the Kansas City Chiefs announced 13 more roster cuts Saturday afternoon.
There was little doubt Pollard's future with the team was in question after reports surfaced Friday night that he was the subject of trade rumors. His undoing might have been a reported clash with defensive coordinator Clancy Pendergast.
Pollard headlined the group of 13 cuts that included:
SS
Bernard Pollard
CB
Jackie Bates
TE Tom Crabtree
DE
Dion Gales
DE
Bobby Greenwood
G
Darryl Harris
WR
Taurus Johnson
WR
Ashley Lelie
DT
Derek Lokey
S
Ricky Price
LB
Zach Thomas
RB
Javarris Williams
WR
Rodney Wright
G
Colin Brown
was placed on injured reserve, clearing another roster spot.
Pollard never lived up to the hype as a second-round pick. With the play of second-year man
DaJuan Morgan
and the addition of veteran
Mike Brown
, it wasn't hard to see Pollard's cut coming.
The cut that might be the most perplexing is the decision to dump veteran wide receiver Ashley Lelie. He made plays this preseason and might have been the team's second best receiver. With the Chiefs also losing
Devard Darling
to injury and cutting
Amani Toomer
, they are thin at receiver.
As it stands now the Chiefs have some curious roster alignment, with only five receivers, four running backs, and four quarterbacks. They won't keep four quarterbacks once
Matt Cassel
recovers from injury, so keep an eye out for movement on that front.
The Chiefs' roster appears to be anything but set. There are still holes on the offensive line, in the receiving corps as we discussed, and on the defensive line.
Scott Pioli
will be watching the waiver wire and looking for additions to the 53-man roster prior to the announcement of the eight-man practice squad.
Stay tuned to Warpaint Illustrated for more news on the Chiefs' cuts and potential additions Sunday and Monday.
