The Chiefs announced Tuesday afternoon that quarterback Tyler Thigpen has been traded to the Miami Dolphins for an undisclosed draft choice.

Thigpen had been the third-team quarterback for the Chiefs this season. With the season-ending injury to Dolphins' quarterback Chad Pennington, Miami needed a quarterback to at least fill out their depth chart. Thigpen may compete with Chad Henne for the Dolphins' starting job.

After entering training camp as Kansas City's top backup to starter Matt Cassel during the offseason, Thigpen was supplanted by Brodie Croyle as the #2 quarterback. He never regained his previous position after a disappointing preseason.

Thigpen threw 18 touchdowns and led the league in quarterback rushing last season for the Chiefs, but won just one game. The Chiefs scrapped the spread-style offense he had been so successful in when Todd Haley was hired as the team's new head coach.

It was reported that the Chiefs had attempted to trade Thigpen to the Jacksonville Jaguars during preseason. Thigpen's trade to Miami is the second deal between the Chiefs and Dolphins this year. General manager Scott Pioli acquired linemen Andy Alleman and Ike Ndukwe from Miami before the regular season.
