Crennel Agrees To Contract With Chiefs

Defensive guru Romeo Crennel, rumored to be joining the Kansas City Chiefs since the season ended weeks ago, has agreed on a new contract. He will be announced Wednesday as the new defensive coordinator in Kansas City.
Landing Crennel was no easy task for the Chiefs, as he was a popular man this offseason. In the last two weeks, he had multiple options according to
Scout.com NFL Insider Adam Caplan
.
He learned that a bidding war took place among an assortment of teams, including one from the AFC West. That team was the Denver Broncos, who struggled down the stretch on defense. The other suitors were the New York Giants, Miami Dolphins, Buffalo Bills and Washington Redskins.
But Kansas City won out and Crennel joins his former assistant coach, Charlie Weis, in the hope that the Chiefs will turn into the New England Patriots. Both coaches, along with general manager
Scott Pioli
, won multiple Super Bowl titles together.
Crennel was fired a year ago as head coach of the Cleveland Browns, but is still considered one of the brightest defensive minds in the NFL. Over the last several months he acted as a consultant for Chiefs head coach Todd Haley.
The two have been in constant contact and have been good friends for many years. When Weis was hired last week, there was little doubt that Crennel would complete the reunion in Kansas City.
It’s not known what will happen to Clancy Pendergast, the Chiefs’ defensive coordinator last season. He could be reassigned as a position coach or terminated altogether. Crennel, a master of the 3-4 defensive scheme, should do wonders for Kansas City’s top draft picks in 2008 and 2009,
Glenn Dorsey
and Tyson Jackson.
The Chiefs are expected to officially announce the Crennel hire at some point on Wednesday.
