Arizona bounced back this week by sweeping San Francisco in a dominating performance.
Wildcats take second game
Kyle Simon led the Wildcats to their fifth series win of the year, going seven innings, while scattering eight hits and striking out three to improve to 5-0 on the year.
"Truthfully I was a little bit tired out there tonight, but I just tried to go out there and attack the zone and let my movement do the work," said Simon.
Simon has every reason to be tired, as he leads the team in innings pitched (45.2), but on this night he wouldn't have to do it alone. Before Simon came out for the 2nd inning, he was already spotted with a two-run lead, thanks to a sacrifice fly by Robert Refsnyder and a two-out RBI single by Johnny Field that skipped through the left side.
The Wildcats were able to tack on three more in the 5th inning after Jett Bandy led off the frame with a double down the left field line, which was just one of his two doubles and three hits on the night. Refsnyder and Field both followed with extra base hits to blow the game open at 4-0.
"I keep telling myself just to see the ball and not to do too much, and all of a sudden my swing is starting to come back," said Bandy, who has increased his batting average 62 percentage points over the last three weeks.
Arizona would go on to score another run in the 5th inning to make it a 5-0 game heading to the sixth. From there the Wildcats would never look back.
Matt Chaffee entered the game for Simon in the 8th inning and threw two shut out innings to seal the deal for the Cats, clinching the 7-0 victory and the series win over San Francisco.
"Simon pitched very well, Chaffee was outstanding and we got some big hits, said UA head coach Andy Lopez. "We've now played two nights in a row of really solid baseball, and when you do that you're usually going to come out on top."
Arizona will try to make it three solid outings in a row tomorrow afternoon, when it will try for the series sweep over San Francisco before the team heads into conference play.
First pitch tomorrow is scheduled noon with Tyler Hale taking the mound for Arizona in the finale.
