KC Chiefs Draft: TE James Hanna

KC Chiefs Draft: TE James Hanna

Despite the addition of free agent tight end Kevin Boss, the Kansas City Chiefs dipped to a bordering southern state to take a look for another.

University of Oklahoma tight end James Hanna is one of the most athletic players in the draft.

The 6-foot-4, 252-pounder ran the 40-yard dash in 4.49 seconds at the NFL scouting combine, also bench pressing 225 pounds 24 times with a 36 1/2 inch vertical leap, a 10-2 broad jump, a 4.11 in the 20-yard shuttle and a 6.76 in the three-cone drill.

Hanna had a private workout with the Kansas City Chiefs over the weekend and scheduled a visit with the Minnesota Vikings.

Among the teams that sent position coaches to his campus Pro Day workout: the Cleveland Browns, Minnesota Vikings, Chicago Bears and an undisclosed AFC team.

An All-Big 12 selection, Hanna caught 18 passes for 292 yards and seven touchdowns as a junior.

As a senior, he caught 25 passes for 363 yards and two scores.

He finished his career with 50 receptions for 702 yards and nine touchdowns.

In high school in Texas, Hanna played wide receiver and caught 53 passes for 765 yards and 11 touchdowns.

His impressive showing at the combine has raised awareness about Hanna.

"I showed my potential," Hanna said in a telephone interview. "I'm hoping some teams are interested in what I can do for them. Most teams just want to know that I'm committed to being a blocker when I need to be because most of them know that I'm capable as a receiver. They want to make sure I'm on board for blocking assignments, and I am absolutely.

"I'm extremely versatile. I can block pretty well. I can line up in the backfield or at wideout or on the line. Whatever I'm asked to do, I feel comfortable."

Hanna said he emulates athletic NFL tight ends like Aaron Hernandez, Jason Witten and Vernon Davis.

"Hernandez does a great job of getting yards after the catch," Hanna said. "Witten is an excellent blocker and a good receiver. Vernon Davis is a real explosive player."
