First Glance: Chiefs 2012 Schedule

If the Kansas City Chiefs are going to make a run for the AFC West title in 2012, it could boil down to the first and last four games of the regular season. And if the Chiefs can become road warriors, they can make it two of three AFC West Division Championships.

When the NFL released its 2012 schedule early Tuesday evening the Kansas City Chiefs had hoped for more primetime exposure this season. A year ago they enjoyed three primetime games, two of them at Arrowhead. This year they appear twice on the prime time slate but both are on the road.

So how does the schedule shape up for the Chiefs? And how many wins will they garner in 2012?

Week 1 vs. Atlanta (Fox / Noon) – The return of All World Tight End Tony Gonzalez serves as the season opener for both teams. The Chiefs, who traded away the future hall of fame inductee three years ago, should open their arms to the man who was as beloved as any Chiefs player in its rich history. Chiefs 24 – Falcons 17

Week 2 @ Buffalo (CBS / Noon) – No one team was hotter to start the 2011 regular season than the Buffalo Bills. They've come to Arrowhead two years in a row and gave the Chiefs all they can handle. This time Kansas City visits Buffalo as both teams meet in an early AFC showdown that could be huge for both teams in December. Bills 31 – Chiefs 13

Week 3 @ New Orleans (CBS / Noon) – The good news for the Chiefs is that they'll face the Saints in the early stages of the season. It's probably too early to tell the impact in this game of Bounty-Gate but if the Chiefs, after being thumped by the Bills in week two, might just be primed for an upset. Saints 24 – Chiefs 23

Week 4 vs. San Diego (CBS / Noon) – It's the first AFC West match up for the Chiefs. The Chiefs have won the last two games in this series at home, both in prime time. This go around though it could be different. But I like the Chiefs chances to get back on track at Arrowhead. Chiefs 28 – Chargers 24

Week 5 vs. Baltimore (CBS / Noon) – Another team that simply has owned the Chiefs, especially at Arrowhead, comes into town with one of the most feared defenses in the NFL. However, the Chiefs are ready this time and lay some payback on the Ravens. Chiefs 23 – Ravens 21

Week 6 @ Tampa Bay (CBS / Noon) – The Bucs made some big noise in free agency and arguably have one of the games brightest young quarterbacks in Kansas City native Josh Freeman. The Chiefs generally fall flat in the state of Florida and this will be more of the same. Bucs 37 – Chiefs 17

Week 8 vs Oakland (CBS / 3:05 PM) –The Raiders and Chiefs always make it a good game. But the men in Silver and Black have had KC's number in recent years. The Raiders under new management might not be as talented as they've been in the past but they will be more disciplined on the field. Chiefs 23 – Raiders 21

Week 9 @ San Diego (NFLN / 7:20 PM) – In the first of two back-to-back prime-time games, the Chiefs travel to face a hungry Chargers team. After sliding by their AFC West counterpart at home in week four, San Diego gets their revenge. Chargers 42 – Chiefs 24

Week 10 @ Pittsburgh (ESPN / 7:30 PM) – There isn't a single game this year that has me more intrigued than this one. Todd Haley versus the Chiefs organization. It'll be the one game that KC's former Head Coach began circling the day he was hired as the Steelers new Offensive Coordinator. But he won't win it. Chiefs 19 – Steelers 17

Week 11 vs. Cincinnati (CBS /Noon) – A year ago Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton shocked the NFL and guided his team to the playoffs. Can he avoid the sophomore slump? Not in this game. Chiefs 28 – Bengals 9

Week 12 vs. Denver (CBS / Noon) – It's unfortunate these two teams had to wait until week 12 to face one another because I believe one of these AFC West combatants will win the division. The stage is set for Crennel vs. Manning and in round one the Chiefs give the high priced gunslinger all he can handle. Chiefs 26 – Broncos 23

Week 13 vs. Carolina (Fox / Noon) – With their third consecutive game at home, this is the final push the Chiefs need to make to set the pace in the division. Though the Panthers are highly improved under Quarterback Cam Newton, the Chiefs complete the hat trick of home victories. Chiefs 31 – Panthers 23

Week 14 @ Cleveland (CBS / Noon) – If Romeo Crennel wants to make a stand against his old team, this is the time to do it. The Chiefs generally play poorly in the state of Ohio but they have a golden opportunity to win a game they must have to keep pace in the AFC West. Chiefs 19 – Browns 13

Week 15 @ Oakland (CBS / 3:15 PM) – At this point of the season, these two teams are going in opposite directions. And that's good news for the Chiefs. However, this is their late season hiccup game. Raiders 17 – Chiefs 10

Week 16 vs. Indianapolis (CBS / Noon) – If Ryan Luck is the starting quarterback for the Colts in the second to last game of the season, then he's probably been pretty steady his rookie season. But that won't be enough to defeat the Chiefs. Chiefs 31 – Colts 16

Week 17 @ Denver (CBS / 3:15 PM) – It's my guess that this game will determine the winner of the division. And I expect this game to be an NBC Flex game that is if Manning is still standing. If not, it'll be cakewalk city for the Chiefs. But Manning is playing and this game does decide the AFC West Champion, it won't be so easy for the team in Red. I said not so easy not impossible. Chiefs 26 – Denver 23 OT
